POST 457 NEWS

Message from the Commander

A traveling ¾ scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was at Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva on May 22nd to 26th. Hundreds of people visited the exhibition Memorial Day weekend. I am proud to say Post 457 was very active during the week with members volunteering to help construct the wall and afterwards with various other tasks necessary to run the exhibition. The Legion, Auxiliary and SAL Color Guards performed the opening ceremony on Friday evening. What an outstanding performance it was! We also volunteered the stage from which all ceremonies were conducted. A "Well Done!" to not only our post members, but to all volunteers for all over our area.
Our Memorial Day Parade commenced at 11 am on Monday, May 26th. Thanks to all who participated in the parade and ceremony at Resthaven Cemetery. Very special thanks to our Auxiliary for the refreshments enjoyed by all following the ceremony.
Election of Post Officers for the 2008 - 2009 Legion year was held at our May meeting. The results are:
Commander - Don Springer
1st Vice Commander - Jerry Van Camp
2nd Vice Commander - Richard Hamelinck
3rd Vice Commander - Ginny Phenes
Adjutant / Finance Officer - Ernie Bishop
Chaplin - Bob Spink
Sergeant-At-Arms - Fred Merscher
Service Officer - Lester Ellis
The Executive Committee consists of:
Stan Maines, John Sherman and Bob Springer.
Thank you to all that volunteered to serve.
Out annual Fathers Day Clambake will take place on June 15th. Tickets are available at the bar and the price is the same as last year, $35. Dewey's 3rd Ward Tavern will cater the event.
Our monthly Post meeting is Thursday, June 19th. Election of three Board of Director members will take place at this meeting. Come to the meeting and be involved! Please contact Fred Merscher or myself if you wish to serve on the Board of Directors.
For those who always attend, I'm looking forward to seeing you again. For those who rarely or never attend, dome on out to the meeting! Be informed! After the meeting enjoy the great chow prepared by Fred.

Yours for the Legion,

Don Springer, Commander

Vietnam Veterans Traveling Wall

I would like to report what a wonderful experience it was to take a part with "The Wall" when it was displayed at Seneca Lake State Park. Several from our Post were involved with the set up and dismantling of the wall. Although it was physically demanding for a bunch of old fat men it was a very wonderful experience. I think I can report for all that participated, when I say we would all do it again.
The programs and displays that were in evidence during the four day event were spectacular. Shame on you if you didn't see some of them. The Sunday night Candlelight Ceremony was incredible.
If any of you know Dan Simons of Devaney-Bennett-Simons Funeral Home please thank him for coordinating this event. What a great job he did.

Ernie Bishop, Adjutant
